Victorian photograph shows 1882 Caius Boat Club crew

  • 12 June 2024

A 140-year-old photograph of Caius Boat Club of a “fixed seat” rowing crew has been shared by the great-grandson of an alumnus.

Revealed on the first day of May Bumps 2024, the photo shows Herbert Henry Rayner front and centre, with the sabre across his knees.

The original story was published in April 2017, on the 190th anniversary of Caius Boat Club, and shared by Jeffrey H. Fields, who provided the photograph. The Victorian gentlemen are pictured in front of the Gate of Honour in Caius Court, which continues to be a favoured venue for sports teams’ photographs.

Jeffrey writes: “I can share this 1882 club picture that Herbert cherished. My great-grandfather (Herbert Henry Rayner) would be pleased to be remembered.”
