Gonville & Caius College Fellow Professor Patrick Chinnery FRCP FMedSci has been awarded The Galen Medal of the Society of Apothecaries.

The Galen Medal in Therapeutics is The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries’ most prestigious award, presented annually and instituted in 1925. The Medal is awarded for valuable services or contributions to the science of therapeutics.

Professor Chinnery was honoured for his work developing treatments for mitochondrial diseases, which are inherited disorders affecting how we produce energy from the food we eat.

The first recipient was Professor W.E. Dixon FRS, who was awarded the medal for his contributions to pharmacy.

Professor Chinnery is the latest distinguished recipient of an award which has Caius connections. Lord Howard Florey was honoured in 1946, for the discovery of penicillin.
