French History prize for Caius Fellow

  • 20 July 2022

Gonville & Caius College Fellow Dr Michael Joseph has won the 2021 French History Article Prize.

Dr Joseph was awarded the prize by The Society for the Study of French History for his article ‘Black women, separation allowances and citizenship in the French Caribbean during the First World War’ (December 2021).

“I'm very grateful to have won the French History Article Prize for 2021,” Dr Joseph said.

“The article finds the First World War in unfamiliar places – Martinique and Guadeloupe – and traces how the families of those conscripted into the French army navigated the system of allowances for soldiers' dependants.

“In so doing, it tries to bring established arguments about the wartime evolution of French welfarism into conversation with longer histories of race, labour, and politics in the Caribbean. I hope people will enjoy reading it!”

Thank you to the Faculty of History for this story
